Emily was a forty-nine-year-old interior designer who was fed up with feeling depressed everyday of her life and tired of her careless and excessive drinking behavior. Simply put, she hated the hangovers she experienced on a regular basis, she was tired of going through broken relationship after broken relationship due to her careless drinking, she was irate with herself for spending her hard-earned money on a worthless habit, she missed her old motivation for doing the things she enjoyed, and she was sick of feeling lethargic every morning.
On top of the identifiable alcohol-related health issues she now experienced, perhaps the most damaging part of her drinking regimen was the undependable and dishonest individual she had turned into. In her heart of hearts she knew that she had been less than truthful about her drinking behavior to her relatives, family, and friends and she also knew she had been dishonest with herself about the "healthy" effects of drinking. What is more, she rationalized gulping three or four drinks before going to social events and she also justified needing a few drinks as soon as she got up so that she could manage the "tension" at work. Stated simply, Emily got to a pivotal time in her life when she saw that she hit rock bottom and was now ready to commence the slow and gradual road that leads to health.
One of the ways that Emily operationalized her "plan" was by requesting a transfer at her place of employment. When her request was approved, she moved 500 miles away to a new city. If nothing else, this undeniably made making new friends and pals and disconnecting herself from her old friends much easier. Then she went to see a doctor in her new location and made an appointment for a thorough exam.
After meeting with the healthcare practitioner and taking numerous lab tests, it became painfully apparent that Emily had made the unfortunate change from alcohol abuse to alcohol addiction and, as a result, was in need of alcohol detox and alcohol treatment. At this stressful time, her healthcare professional made it a point to go over the diverse alcoholic symptoms and the general symptoms of alcoholism. In addition to spending a lot of time focusing on Emily's alcoholism symptoms, the physician also told Emily that it was determined that she was clinically depressed and in need of therapy for her medical situation.
Due to her willingness to follow through with the rehabilitation protocol, after seven weeks of inpatient rehab, Emily was ready to start rehabilitation on an outpatient basis. At this point in time, she began working at her new job and over the weeks began revitalizing her body by taking vitamins, living an alcohol-free way of life, drinking filtered water, working out, and eating healthy foods.
After approximately eleven weeks of outpatient treatment during which time she never experienced a relapse, Emily quit going to alcohol counseling and instead started going five times every week to local Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. Going to these meetings helped Emily follow through with her alcohol-free style of life, they gave her the support she wanted, and they served as an unceasing reminder of the negative results that are related to excessive and hazardous drinking. Compared with her life just a few short months ago, life was now positive and loaded with promise that she could have never longed for or attained while she was involved in hazardous and careless drinking behavior.
