Andy was a high school freshman who frequently seemed to be living on the edge. Andy had a daring personality and usually wanted to do what his older brothers were doing. The core drawback with this was that all three of his brothers were at least 21 years old and were consequently able from a legal point of view to drive a car or truck and to ingest alcohol.
Andy, conversely, had a difficult time understanding the fact that as a fifteen-year-old teenager he should not be drinking alcoholic beverages. In fact, on the other hand, Andy generally drank with his friends after school, predominantly on the weekends.
One weekend, Andy made up his mind to drive around with some of his older pals. One of his buddies was old enough to buy alcohol. After buying some wine coolers, beer, and wine, Andy and his friends went to a public recreational area and drank for approximately three hours.
After drinking more or less eight bottles of beer, Andy started to feel nauseous and then threw up. When he lost consciousness on the football field, one of his drinking pals called 911 for immediate medical assistance. It was fortunate that the call for emergency help was made because when his friends went to the hospital to see Andy, they found out that Andy had been manifesting alcohol poisoning symptoms. More to the point, Andy had suffered through an alcohol overdose.
After receiving alcohol poisoning treatment, Andy was truthfully amazed to find out that he had overdosed on alcohol because he "only" had more or less five or ten alcoholic beverages. When he explained this to the attending doctor at the hospital, conversely, the healthcare practitioner told Andy that drinking five or ten wine coolers over a two or three hour period of time could in fact be quite a bit more alcohol than can be metabolized by the body. The physician further emphasized how extreme amounts of alcohol can cause the brain to shut down an individual's respiratory system and that when this transpires, a person can cease to exist.
This was the first word of warning to Andy that he was drinking in a harmful manner and that there are effects for such actions. The healthcare practitioner told Andy that he was a lucky individual because he almost died from alcohol poisoning the previous night.
The healthcare practitioner also talked to Andy's parents and suggested that they get alcohol counseling for Andy. His parents were thrilled that Andy was out of harm's way and told the healthcare professional that they would follow through on getting Andy alcohol treatment.
While conversing with his parents, Andy informed them that there must be a good reason why he did not pass away and that he felt a sense of thanksgiving that he was still alive. He also informed his parents that the most ironic part about the entire drinking event was that he had learned about alcohol poisoning last week at school in health class.
At the time, what his health instructor, Mr. Johnson, was teaching didn't seem to make too much sense to Andy. Now that he almost passed away, conversely, he felt that he should have listened more carefully in Mr. Johnson's health class and applied what he had learned to his personal life.
Andy notified his parents that he couldn't wait to go back to Mr. Johnson's classroom and express regret to Mr. Johnson for not paying closer attention to something that was as significant as learning about alcohol poisoning.
